At least 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
